Ford’s exciting EcoSport crossover is a versatile family vehicle that moulds the firm’s hatchback expertise with its SUV innovations. The outcome is a model that feels comfortable in town or country and turns heads in either environment.
The tall posture, robust bumper and side skirt trim, and 4x4-style tailgate-mounted spare wheel are all features of the car’s compact body. It sits higher up than a Ford hatchback would, helping it to stay clear of rough terrain if you do need to tackle muddy tracks. Zetec is the opening trim which fits alloy wheels, LED signature lights and front fog lights at no additional cost. A horizontally-opening tailgate on all EcoSport models gives simple access to items stored in the generous boot.
Split, foldable rear seats give you a number of storage options and the flexibility that each adventure demands. Tumbling the rear bench completely forward creates a 1,238-litre area for holding whatever you need to carry. Underseat and centre console storage keeps smaller items close by, and subtle details such as a cooled glovebox raise the comfort levels in the cabin.
The five-door is offered with a choice of four engine options that include Ford’s award-wining 1.0-litre EcoBoost powertrain.
The celebrated unit gets 123bhp and a five-speed manual gearbox which sees it hit peak fuel efficiency of 52.3mpg combined.
This is only bettered by the 94bhp 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi which boasts returns of as much as 64.2mpg combined.
The crossover is not just tough in looks but in build also. The car’s high-strength body shell is immensely strong to withstand impact forces but also lightweight. Ford’s Intelligent Protection System, a comprehensive suite of active safety technology, is included as standard to prevent accidents in the first place. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), for example, stops the wheels from locking during an emergency stop so you can steer away from an imminent collision. Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) prevents a dangerous skid and corrects the oversteer or understeer which can cause a total loss of control.
The level of multimedia technology in the EcoSport is impressive too as it comes with Ford SYNC as standard. Alongside AppLink, which lets you control your favourite apps through the on-board display, Ford SYNC includes Emergency Assistance which automatically calls the emergency services in the event of an accident.
