The new Ford Mondeo has all the best features of the previous iteration and so much more. The latest family favourite offers a more refined interior and uprated technology, plus the option for hybrid power.
The latest Ford look is instantly recognisable on the car’s body. A folded bonnet ends at the brand’s characteristic horizontal grille and aggressive-looking headlamps. At the sculpted rear are oval taillights which feature on all three shapes: estate, saloon and hatchback. They each impress with alloy wheels, chrome window surrounds, front fog lights and halogen projector headlamps as standard.
Each shape alters the cabin in its own way to suit your typical journeys. Choose the estate for a maximum cargo capacity of 1,630 litres when the rear bench is pushed forward. The five-door hatchback includes the same split-folding rear bench to give you much-needed flexibility but a shorter length overall. Every Mondeo variant feels first-class when you slide behind the wheel or into one of the passenger seats. Chrome door handles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and ambient lighting create a feeling of relaxation and luxury.
New ground has been broken by the Mondeo as it brings hybrid power to the model name for the first time in Europe.
The 2.0-litre dual-power system emits only 99g/km of CO2 with the help of Smart Regenerative Charging and the ability to switch seamlessly between electric and petrol mode. If you don’t demand hybrid power you can opt for Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine or an ultra-frugal Duratorq diesel.
The pick of the diesel bunch is the 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi ECOnetic which returns a maximum 78.5mpg combined when under the bonnet of the hatchback.
Multiple safety innovations make the Mondeo one of the safest in its class, which Euro NCAP confirmed by awarding a five-star rating for crash safety. Inflatable rear seat belts are one example of clever Ford developments that have been made for ultimate protection in the model. Helping to stop accidents altogether are the active systems included among the Intelligent Protection System (IPS), such as an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and Hill Start Assist (HSA).
Ford has fitted much of its latest infotainment technology inside the Mondeo to join these leading safety features. The centrally-mounted eight-inch touchscreen is used to operate Ford SYNC 2, the manufacturer’s main audio and communications system. As standard it offers Bluetooth®, voice controls, Emergency Assistance and a USB port for iPod or MP3 connectivity. A DAB radio, satellite navigation system and SD card slot are added from the Zetec upwards.
